Wilkesboro police have found the Nissan Xterra reported stolen over the weekend from a convenience store parking lot. It was found by the person who reported it stolen, Jenny Pennington. She and a relative were out looking for the vehicle, she tells police, and found it behind the MIllers Creek Methodist Church in a location that can't be seen from Indian Hill Road. No damage is reported to the vehicle and it has been returned to the owner, Mary Eller, who is Pennington's mother. Police say they are continuing their investigation of everything surrounding the case.

With school in Wilkes starting Monday, officials are putting out a couple of reminders concerning buses. First, with the substantial changes to bus routes we told you about earlier this month, there is bound to be some confusion and fine-tuning the first couple of weeks of class.School officials ask that children be at their bus stop by 10 minutes before the scheduled time for the bus to arrive, to allow for the inevitable confusion and its effect on the bus coming at the scheduled time. Also, school officials say, it's time to start being on the lookout for school buses during your morning and evening driving activities. Remember that you cannot pass a school bus from either direction if it has the stop arm extended and red lights flashing. One other note: on the first day of school, students will attend only a half day. They will be dismissed at 12:30 in the elementaries and at 1pm in the middle and high schools. Lunch will be served before students are sent home.

For the third time in the past four years, a North Carolina Christmas tree farm has won the right to provide the White House Christmas tree. Rusty Estes and Jessie Davis of River Ridge Tree Farms in Ashe County won the National Christmas Tree Grand Championship held as part of the National Christmas Tree Association's annual meeting, which ended Saturday. They're scheduled to provide the Christmas tree for the White House Blue Room this season. It will be the 11th time since the program started in 1966 that a North Carolina tree will be in the place of honor in the White House.
